Background
The Shanghai Taihe Wastewater Treatment Plant is the city’s first “garden-style” fully underground facility and one of the largest full-process underground wastewater treatment plants in China. It integrates smart technology, ecology, and resource recovery, representing a benchmark for modern urban environmental infrastructure. KINJOYA was responsible for the roof waterproofing and the waterproofing of the basement roof slab.
Solution
The roof utilized KIN TARPO DR TPO waterproofing membrane, known for its excellent weather and UV resistance, suitable for Shanghai’s variable climate, including high temperatures, humidity, and frequent rain. The basement roof slab primarily used KINJOYA FM VERDASYS root-resistant SBS waterproofing membrane. In addition to the high elasticity and puncture resistance of standard SBS membranes, this product incorporates specific root-inhibiting components to effectively resist plant root penetration. As the facility is designed as “garden-style,” the area above the basement roof slab supports extensive greenery, making root resistance crucial for maintaining long-term waterproofing integrity.
Outcomes
Since completion and operation in 2019, the vegetation on the roof slab has thrived, and the waterproofing layer has experienced no leakage due to root penetration. This success has ensured the safe operation of the underground wastewater treatment facilities, demonstrating the reliability of the integrated root-resistant waterproofing system under sustained green coverage and demanding environmental conditions.
