Background

The National Tennis Center waterproofing project focused on a large-scale, multi-part systematic approach covering 14,000 sqm. Different structures like the basement, roof, and spectator stands required a combination of rigid and flexible methods, with special attention to critical details, to ensure long-term leak prevention and structural safety for this premier Asian tournament venue. A major challenge was the tight construction schedule, as work could only be carried out during the off-season, requiring high-quality work within a limited timeframe.

Solution

The renovation focused on the roof and spectator stands. The roof used KINJOYA FM PLAIN membrane, known for its low-temperature flexibility and puncture resistance. The stands used KINJOYA PU TAU polyurethane coating, chosen for its elasticity and adhesion to accommodate micro-cracks and temperature movement in the concrete. Complex roof details like equipment bases and pipe penetrations were reinforced with a composite system: a 1.5mm polyurethane coating as an additional layer, followed by the KINJOYA FM PLAIN membrane. The stands were coated using a combination of mechanical spraying and manual application for uniform coverage. To meet the off-season deadline, a detailed zone-based, segmented construction plan was executed, optimizing resources for efficient, high-quality completion.

Outcomes

The roof system successfully withstands Beijing’s seasonal temperature variations and environmental factors, ensuring no leaks and protecting electrical and other equipment inside. The PU TAU coating on the stands effectively accommodates micro-cracks and movement, providing a safe, dry environment for spectators and enhancing their experience. The composite reinforcement at critical details eliminated traditional leakage risks. The efficient segmented construction plan allowed completion within the tight off-season schedule, ensuring the venue’s readiness for events without compromising quality.
