Kinjoya Offers Industrial Plant Waterproofing Solution

Critical Demands and Challenges

Industrial plant waterproofing concerns not only the durability of the building itself but also directly impacts production safety, equipment lifespan and corporate economic benefits. Once a plant leaks, water droplets may fall directly onto production lines, electrical cabinets or raw materials, causing equipment short circuits, product contamination or even production shutdown accidents. Precision instruments and control systems are highly sensitive to moisture, and long-term high-humidity environments can lead to frequent malfunctions, affecting process stability and product quality.

Reliable waterproofing systems prevent unplanned downtime caused by leakage, ensuring order delivery schedules are maintained and protecting the company's bottom line. Plant roofs often face challenges such as large spans, dramatic temperature fluctuations and frequent mechanical vibration from equipment operation, which ordinary residential waterproofing materials cannot handle. For example, color steel sheet roofs are prone to developing gaps at joints due to repeated thermal expansion and contraction, requiring professional materials with excellent elasticity and fatigue resistance to maintain long-term integrity. Additionally, some workshops have special environmental conditions such as high temperatures or corrosive gases, demanding waterproofing materials with chemical resistance and long-term stability to withstand these aggressive exposures without degradation.

A Landmark Project Practice

We once participated in a landmark industrial project—the Taihe Wastewater Treatment Plant. This facility is one of China's largest full-process underground wastewater treatment plants, integrating intelligence, ecological sustainability, and resource recovery—truly a benchmark project for modern urban environmental infrastructure.

We were primarily responsible for the roof waterproofing and basement roof waterproofing of this prestigious project. TPO waterproofing membrane was selected for the roof area, offering excellent weather resistance and UV resistance to adapt to Shanghai's seasonal climate variations. For the basement roof, a root-resistant SBS waterproofing membrane was specified and applied. This specialized membrane not only possesses the high elasticity and puncture resistance of conventional SBS membranes but also incorporates special root-resistant components that effectively prevent plant root penetration. Due to the "garden-style" design concept, extensive landscaping and greenery were planned above the basement roof area. Plant roots have extremely strong growth capacity; if the waterproofing layer lacks sufficient root resistance, it could easily be penetrated by roots over time, causing leakage that would be difficult and expensive to repair. This waterproofing work was completed and commissioned in 2019. To date, the vegetation in the roof planting area has thrived, and the waterproofing layer remains free of any signs of leakage caused by root damage, effectively ensuring the safe and uninterrupted operation of the underground wastewater treatment facilities below. The project demonstrates how proper material selection and professional installation can meet both aesthetic landscaping requirements and critical infrastructure protection needs simultaneously.
