Background
As a key national airport construction project during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, Hohhot New Airport set extremely high standards for underground structural waterproofing, especially in critical areas like the airfield pavement, integrated transportation hub, and maintenance hangars. A three-part system was established, combining upgraded material performance, process innovation, and full-process intelligent control, aiming for “100-year durability and watertightness” under severe cold climate and complex geological conditions.
Solution
The underground sections used KIN FLAGO DR HDPE pre-applied waterproofing membrane, while interior areas employed KINJOYA PU series waterproofing coating. The KIN FLAGO DR HDPE membrane offers excellent weatherability and puncture resistance, suitable for Hohhot’s cold winters and temperature variations. Its pre-applied reverse-bonding method integrates it tightly with the subsequent concrete pour. The KINJOYA PU series coating provides flexibility and strong adhesion, forming a seamless film over complex interior substrates and effectively sealing details like corners and pipe penetrations.
Outcomes
Multiple innovative technologies were successfully applied in the extreme climate, providing a waterproofing model for large transportation hubs in cold, arid regions. The project passed final acceptance inspection, marking a key step towards full operation. Meticulous construction organization and quality control were implemented, especially for the airfield pavement. Strict adherence to the pre-applied reverse-bonding process ensured a strong bond between the KIN FLAGO DR HDPE membrane and the concrete. For interior areas, substrate cleaning and coating thickness were tightly controlled. A comprehensive quality traceability system was established, covering material inspection, process control, and final testing, ensuring the quality of the 40,000 sqm waterproofing area and laying a solid foundation for the structural safety and long-term durability of the airport’s airfield and related facilities.
