Background

The Beijing Workers’ Stadium (“Gongti”), a landmark sports venue in the capital, hosts major events and cultural activities. Its protective renovation project began in 2021. The waterproofing work focused on the “bowl-shaped” stand structure and the newly added canopy system. The goal was to resolve historical leakage issues, enhance spectator comfort under extreme weather, and achieve dual improvements in durability and user experience through high-performance materials and multi-functional integrated design.

Solution

The renovation addressed past leakage issues in the stands by implementing a systematic waterproofing solution. The project aimed to fully cover the stands with a sealed waterproofing layer that could withstand Beijing's rainy and freeze - thaw cycles. A new non - opening canopy system was added, integrating sunshade, water collection/drainage, and snow melting functions into a unified design. This reduces the direct impact of rain on the stands and the field. The structure of the field and stands was also optimized to improve the overall anti - seepage performance. The stand waterproofing utilized the KINJOYA FM PLAIN membrane, which was selected for its excellent low - temperature flexibility and puncture resistance.

Outcomes

The lifespan of the stand and structural waterproofing system has been extended to over 20 years, significantly reducing long-term maintenance costs. The new canopy provides comprehensive rain protection, ensuring events can proceed as scheduled even in adverse weather, greatly improving spectator comfort and event stability. The stadium pioneered the integration of photovoltaic power generation, waterproofing/drainage, and snow melting functions within a single canopy design. Its estimated annual power generation capacity exceeds 1 million kWh, meeting part of the venue’s operational electricity needs.
